The lists of questions below help you remember the topics to keep in mind during follow-up appointments. You do not need to ask them all at every visit; choose the ones that fit your situation.
About the Diagnosis
- What is my child's seizure type and, if there is one, epilepsy syndrome?
- Has the cause been identified? Are further tests needed?
- What is the expected course of this epilepsy? Is there a chance it will go away in the future?
- What might the triggers of the seizures be?
About Medication Treatment
- How does this medication work, and why was it chosen?
- Which side effects should I watch for? Which ones are emergencies?
- Is regular blood testing needed for the medication?
- What should I do if I miss a dose?
- Does it interact with other medications, herbal products, or vaccines?
About Daily Life
- Which sports can my child do? Is there any special restriction for swimming?
- Is any special information or accommodation needed at school?
- What should I pay attention to regarding sleep, nutrition, and screens?
When a Medication Change or Advanced Treatment Comes Up
- Why are we making a change? What are the benefits and risks of the new option?
- If the seizures cannot be controlled, are non-medication options (diet, surgery, VNS) appropriate?
- Is it time for a referral to an epilepsy center?
