Important Notice — Please Read
  • This book has been prepared for educational and informational purposes; it does not replace medical examination, diagnosis, or treatment.
  • The information here is general in nature. Every child is unique; only the physician following your child can make decisions specific to them.
  • Do not start or stop any therapy, medication, or support program without consulting your physician.
  • If you notice a developmental regression in your child (the loss of a skill they had gained) or a sudden change in behavior, contact your physician without delay.
  • The information is based on the science current at the time the book was prepared; approaches to diagnosis and treatment may evolve over time.

Preface

When a question mark appears about your child's development — "Other children their age are talking, why isn't mine?", "Was walking late?", "Is this behavior normal?" — a great many thoughts probably crossed your mind all at once. All of these questions are natural, and all of them deserve an answer. This book was written precisely to bring together the answers to these questions patiently, in plain language, and with their scientific foundations.

Childhood is the period when the human brain develops most rapidly and is most open to being shaped. This is, on one hand, a great responsibility and, on the other, a great opportunity: the developing brain, when supported appropriately and in a timely way, has a remarkable capacity for adaptation and repair. Knowledge is the antidote to uncertainty and fear on this journey.

In writing this guide, I tried to achieve two things at the same time: to be scientifically accurate and up to date, while using a language that a mother or father with no expertise in medicine or education could comfortably understand. Here and there, medical terms appear; because being able to speak the same language as your physician, so that you can share in your child's care, makes it worthwhile to know these terms. But I explained every term where it first appears.

I would like to share, right from the start, an approach you will encounter often throughout the book: not every difference in development is "a flaw that needs to be corrected"; sometimes it is a difference in the way a child perceives and learns about the world. Our aim is not to fit your child into a mold, but to help them reach their own potential, at their own pace. Even so, when there is a genuine delay or problem, the value of noticing it early and offering early support is beyond question; that is why, throughout the book, I champion the principle of "let's see it early and support it early" rather than "let's wait and see."
