An epilepsy diagnosis affects not just one child but the whole family. Siblings in particular are often affected quietly but deeply. This chapter focuses on protecting the balance in the family and looking after the needs of all your children.
The Invisible Burden on Siblings
The sibling of a child with epilepsy can experience complicated feelings: jealousy of the attention given to the sick sibling, and at the same time guilt over feeling that way, worry for their sibling, the fear of witnessing a seizure, or the worry "am I going to get sick too?" Some siblings suppress their own needs and troubles so as not to upset their parents; they take on the role of the "good child who doesn't cause problems." This silence does not mean they have no needs.
Ways to Support Siblings
- Inform them. Explain to the sibling, in an age-appropriate way, what epilepsy is, that it isn't contagious, and what to do during a seizure. Knowledge reduces fear.
- Make room for their feelings. Tell them it's normal to feel jealousy, anger, or fear. Offer a safe space where they can talk about these feelings rather than suppressing them.
- Set aside special time for them too. Create small, uninterrupted moments that are just theirs (a game together, a walk). This carries the message, "You are very precious to us too."
- Don't place too much responsibility on them. The sibling shouldn't be expected to be a "second caregiver"; they are still a child and have the right to live their own childhood.
Partners and Marriage
Coping with a chronic health condition can also strain the relationship between partners: sleepless nights, anxiety, sharing responsibilities, and burnout. It's important to communicate openly, share the responsibilities, and act as a team rather than blaming each other. From time to time, allow yourselves moments that are just the two of you, where you don't talk about epilepsy; nurturing your relationship is valuable for the health of the whole family.
