The lists of questions below help you remember the topics to keep in mind during follow-up appointments. You do not need to ask them all at every visit; choose the ones that fit your situation.

About the Diagnosis

  • What is my child's seizure type and, if there is one, epilepsy syndrome?
  • Has the cause been identified? Are further tests needed?
  • What is the expected course of this epilepsy? Is there a chance it will go away in the future?
  • What might the triggers of the seizures be?

About Medication Treatment

  • How does this medication work, and why was it chosen?
  • Which side effects should I watch for? Which ones are emergencies?
  • Is regular blood testing needed for the medication?
  • What should I do if I miss a dose?
  • Does it interact with other medications, herbal products, or vaccines?

About Daily Life

  • Which sports can my child do? Is there any special restriction for swimming?
  • Is any special information or accommodation needed at school?
  • What should I pay attention to regarding sleep, nutrition, and screens?

When a Medication Change or Advanced Treatment Comes Up

  • Why are we making a change? What are the benefits and risks of the new option?
  • If the seizures cannot be controlled, are non-medication options (diet, surgery, VNS) appropriate?
  • Is it time for a referral to an epilepsy center?
